Community Leaders are Fighting Against These LIRR Changes

The LIRR is the most popular commuter rail service in New York. It has a track network covering four counties – Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester and Rockland – delivering commuters to and from Manhattan and other parts of the city. But new changes are underway and community leader are fighting against these LIRR changes.

    Changes are being made

At present, the majority of LIRR trains heading to Manhattan conclude their journey either at Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan or at Long Island City in Queens. This has caused congestion, overcrowding and delays in both boroughs.

In an effort to cut down on overcrowding and improve travel times, the MTA has been working on a series of major infrastructure projects. The latest is East Side Access, which will allow Long Island riders to connect with Grand Central Terminal on the east side of Manhattan.

This will greatly reduce or eliminate the need for many subway transfers. Allowing Long Island riders to travel directly to their jobs in Manhattan from the LIRR’s new 8-track terminal under Grand Central once the project opens.

However, some Long Island commuters have been worried about the LIRR’s plan to increase the number of Brooklyn shuttle trains and decrease express service. Riders and advocates are concerned that this will cause added stress and inconvenience for the Brooklyn and Manhattan commuters who rely on the LIRR for their transportation needs.

Several public meetings are being held to give the public an opportunity to learn more about the changes and comment on the new timetables. You can attend one of the events or submit a virtual comment here.
